The San Francisco Giants placed shortstop Thairo Estrada on the 7-day concussion IL on Sunday while also trading for Chicago Cubs minor league shortstop Dixon Machado.

Estrada, 26, was hit in the helmet by a pitch from Mark Leiter Jr. in the fifth inning of Saturday's win by the Giants and had to be helped off the field. With Brandon Crawford out of the lineup with a knee injury, the Giants were in need of a shortstop.

Machado, 30, was hitting .312 with a .402 on-base percentage for Triple-A Iowa and will start for the Giants against the Cubs on Sunday night.

The Tampa Bay Rays are acquiring veteran lefty hitting outfielder David Peralta from the Arizona Diamondbacks for catching prospect Christian Cerda, sources familiar with the deal tell ESPN.

Peralta, 34, is a 9-year veteran with a career .803 OPS. He's hitting .248 with 12 home runs in 87 games this season, playing exclusively in left field for Arizona.

The Cardinals acquired left-handed pitcher JoJo Romero from the Phillies in exchange for infielder Edmundo Sosa on Saturday.

Romero will report to Triple-A Memphis, and infielder Paul DeJong will be activated off the Cardinals' taxi squad to the Major League roster for Saturday's game.
 
 

The Los Angeles Dodgers have added to their bullpen by trading for Chicago Cubs right-handed reliever Chris Martin, sources told ESPN's Buster Olney on Saturday.

The Dodgers' bullpen has been shaky at times and dealing with a number of injuries this season, including losing top setup reliever Daniel Hudson to a season-ending torn left ACL as well as injuries to Blake Treinen and Tommy Kahnle.

The Seattle Mariners, looking to end a postseason drought that stretches to 2001, acquired the best arm on the trade market Friday night in a deal for right-hander Luis Castillo of the Cincinnati Reds.

Minor leaguers Noelvi Marte, Levi Stoudt, Edwin Arroyo and Andrew Moore are headed to Cincinnati, the teams announced. Marte, a shortstop, is the highest rated of the group, with ESPN's Kiley McDaniel ranking him the 12th-best prospect in baseball ahead of the season.

"We felt this was the best return we could get for Luis,'' Reds general manager Nick Krall said.

The first-place New York Mets acquired outfielder Tyler Naquin and left-handed reliever Phillip Diehl from the Cincinnati Reds on Thursday night in a trade for two minor leaguers.

The New York Yankees made the first of what could be a flurry of moves ahead of next week's trade deadline, acquiring All-Star outfielder Andrew Benintendi from the Kansas City Royals, it was announced on Wednesday night.

The Yankees are sending three minor league pitching prospects to the Royals in exchange for the 28-year-old Benintendi: right-hander Beck Way, right-hander Chandler Champlain and left-hander T.J. Sikkema.

The first-place New York Mets added some much-needed punch at designated hitter Friday, acquiring Daniel Vogelbach from the Pittsburgh Pirates in a trade for rookie reliever Colin Holderman.

The burly Vogelbach, a left-handed hitter and an All-Star in 2019 with Seattle, was batting .228 with 12 home runs, 34 RBIs and a .769 OPS in 75 games for the rebuilding Pirates.

The New York Yankees have acquired Tyler Wade from the Los Angeles Angels in exchange for a player to be named later.

Wade, who had spent his entire career with the Yankees until they traded him last November, will report to Triple-A.

The 27-year-old is hitting just .218/.272/.272 in 163 plate appearances this season.

The Atlanta Braves have acquired veteran second baseman Robinson Cano in a minor league deal for cash considerations with the San Diego Padres.

Cano, 39, hit a combined .149 with one homer and four RBIs in 74 at-bats for the Padres and New York Mets this season.
